4 Week Project, 2024
Over 12 million tons of furniture is thrown away each year in the US.
The New York Times, 2022
One’s future appeal to furniture can be hard to predict. Furniture is typically rigid and fixed, unable to adapt to change. Replacing unwanted furniture is a hassle and often results a dump run.
Shelves are found throughout the home and act as both functional and decorative items. Shelving is usually built for one orientation and may not be able to fit desired items for storage or display.
Limited Accommodations
Current shelving lacks customizability
This longevity oversight may lead to descreased user appeal and more overcomsumption/waste of furniture.
How might we create adjustable, lasting shelving solutions for users?
Design Criteria
Reliable
Users need to be able to trust their shelving to hold their valuable items.
Simple
Shelving design should optimize simplicity in user interaction, form, and manufacturing.
Adaptable
Shelving should allow different orientations as user preferece fluxuates over time.
Sustainable

Shelf boards are friction-fit, offering easy adjustability by hand and requires no hardware.
Neodymium magnets are inset in support notches. They align with a magnet strip on the back edge of the shelves, giving users extra peace of mind.
Tuyo’s parts are purchased individually to give the user full control of their vision and limit unnecessary consumption.
